Chapter 14: Troubleshooting Common Problems
The JMF provides the framework for rendering media in OpenOffice.org. Out-of-the-box,
it supports only a limited set of media formats. Media types which are missing in the
actual JMF can be added via Plugins.
JMF MP3 Plugin (optional)
The MP3-Plugin allows playing audio in MP3-Format via JMF and, thus, with
OpenOffice.org.
Jffmpeg - a codec pack for the JMF (optional)
Jffmpeg is a codec pack, which extends the JMF to include many more medium types.
With Jffmpeg all of the FFmpeg project (libavcodec) supported medium types are
playable.
Installing the JRE
Installation instructions are given when you select the download. See
http://www.java.com/en/download/
Activating the JRE in OpenOffice.org
Once the JRE is installed, start OpenOffice.org and open Tools > Options > OpenOffice.org
> Java dialogue which will look something like the following graphic.
Do wait a bit for OpenOffice.org to locate any installed JREs and list them. In the case where
the JRE is installed in a location other than the standard location of /usr/java/, click the
Add button and set the path to wherever the JRE is installed. The new JRE should now be
listed in the dialogue.
Installating the JMF
1. Do review the License Agreement for the JMF. Where possible, install the
Performance Pack. When, installing the software, execute all commands as the root
user. Installation as a user limits use of the JMF to that user.
