Chapter 7: Databases and Data Sources
3. In the Form Navigator dialog, right-click the Main Form item and choose
Properties.
4. Click the Data tab.
5. Make sure the Content Type is set correctly (Table, Query, SQL command).
6. Choose appropriate table or query from the Content drop-down or click the builder
button (the ellipsis button) to create an SQL command.
Associating data with a field
Once the form has a data source, one can link fields to controls. To do so:
1. Add the control to the form or click once to activate an existing control.
2. Ungroup the control by right-clicking and choosing Group > Edit Group.
3. Deselect the ungrouped controls.
4. Right-click the data control, not the label, and choose Properties.
5. Click the Data tab.
6. Choose a field from the Data Field drop-down.
7. Close the Properties dialog box.
8. Regroup the control by selecting the control and the label then right-clicking and
choosing Group > Group.
Be aware that when linking a field to a control in this way, every time that control is used,
changes that are made are stored in the actual data source.
Activating form controls in a document
While editing a data source is one use for forms, users may want to use a form for other
things. For example, to add a button to a spreadsheet that performs a calculation or to a
presentation that runs a video clip.
Each control has a number of events associated with it. An event is something that occurs
due to user action. For example, when the mouse is moved, an event fires each time it enters
the area of a control and each time it leaves that control's area. Typing a character also fires
an event. So does clicking the mouse.
The Events tab of the Properties dialog for each control lists the events available for that
control. For each event, one can specify what happens when that event fires. Do so by
clicking the ellipsis button next to the event, and then pointing to the OpenOffice.org macro
that performs the desired action.
The form itself has events, as well. To access these:
1. When editing the form, click the Form Navigator button on the Form Design
toolbar.
