Chapter 9: Advanced Techniques
New templates saved using File > Templates > Save or by selecting the “Template” file type
in the “normalSave dialogue. User templates are usually stored in the
<path_to>/.openoffice.org2/user/template directory. The template is made
available, anytime, by selecting it in the New dialogue (File > New > From Templates and
Documents). When the template is opened, a new document will be created based on that
template.
Remember to update the view of the templates in the dialogue to ensure that newly created
templates are visible. In this case, select File > Templates > Organize and in the submenu of
the Commands button, choose Update. To modify the template oneself, call this file via File
> Templates > Edit and then edit it.
Using OpenOffice.org over a Network
Where users home directories are remotely mounted via Samba, NFS or other similar file
storage method under *NIX , it is sometimes necessary to make changes to modify the shell
script that starts Openoffice.org. The following provides a possible solution:
1. Locate the startup script. Usually in
/<install_dir>/OpenOffice.org2.app/Contents/openofficeorg2.0/program.
2. Edit this file with a suitable text editor such as vi and change the following lines as
indicated:
SAL_ENABLE_FILE_LOCKING=1
export SAL_ENABLE_FILE_LOCKING
3. to either
SAL_ENABLE_FILE_LOCKING=0
export SAL_ENABLE_FILE_LOCKING
4. or comment them out as shown below:
#SAL_ENABLE_FILE_LOCKING=1
#export SAL_ENABLE_FILE_LOCKING
5. Restart OpenOffice.org.
NOTE: This may or may not work depending on whether or not the network filesystem is set up correctly. Please
see the System Administration Guide for the Operating System that is in use.
